History of the Scholarship
The original endowment was established in 2010 via the leadership of Dr. Lanny Hass, Ms. Eleanor Stell (program facilitators) and the alumni of the 2008-10 class of the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission Agricultural Leadership Development Program (NCTTFC ALDP). The endowment was established to honor Billy Caldwell and Bill Collins for their support and contribution of the NCTTFC ALDP within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Billy Caldwell supported the program from its inception until his retirement in 2000 and continued as a program contributor until 2013. Collins has been the Director or Co-Director of 11 programs, beginning with the second program, each consisting of 50 days of training over a two year period for about 30 individuals in each program. Distributions from the fund will be used to award the Billy Caldwell/Bill Collins Need-Based Scholarship for the NCTTFC ALDP to a limited number of NCTTFC ALDP applicants who meet the eligibility requirements. The scholarship will cover some portion of the chosen applicants’ tuition to the ALDP. In the 2020-2022 program, the scholarship will be $800 of the $1,600 fee for recipients selected.
